The Government, through the Department of Industry (the department), strives to encourage the sustainable growth of Australian industry by developing a national innovation system that drives cutting edge science and research, enhances international competitiveness and builds productivity.
The department provides Government with advice on industry issues associated with major Defence procurement programs and works with the primes to identify opportunities which match the capabilities of Australian Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
With its focus on industry development and ultimately wealth creation, the department aims to maximise the competitive opportunities for Australian companies in major defence projects. The department seeks to provide access to export opportunities, and more importantly, global supply chains for all Australian companies; primes and SMEs alike.

The department provides information to assist firms to maximise participation in the Defence industry and to help Australian Companies understand their export licensing requirements.
The department has produced a number of Industry Capability Directories to promote the capabilities of individual companies, as well as those of the industry as a whole. The department also produces marketing material supporting the Australian industry presence at international and domestic trade shows.
The department is happy to assist all companies (Primes and SMEs) with their industry participation efforts and work with them to address any barriers that may exist.
